How to Change IP address in Windows 7 or Vista
The world is now rapidly switching to Windows Vista and 7, 7 in particular from XP. To be honest, changing your IP isn’t much different in 7 and Vista than XP. However there are a few steps that can confuse you are working in Vista and 7 and were formerly XP user.
Here is step by step information on how to change your network IP address in Windows 7 and XP:
- Click on the widows icon on the bottom left of your screen.
- Simply type command and press Enter key to load MS DOS prompt.
- In the DOS prompt, type ipconfig /release and hit Enter to disable your internet connection.
- Next, click on Network and Sharing Center, you can open it through the Windows icon, the same way you opened MS Dos prompt in step 2.
- Here you’ll see a view your active connections, under that you will find a Local Area Network Tab.
- Click on the tab and then click on the properties you’ll find at bottom left.
- Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) tab you’ll find under General tab.
- A new window will open; check the box which says Use the following IP address.
- Type in 111.111.111.111 until the box is filled.
- Then press Tab and you’ll see the subnet mask section will be assigned numbers automatically.
- Click on OK next
- Pressing OK again will bring you to the Local Area Connection window again.
- Right click Local Area Network again and open its properties again.
- Once again open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
- Select the option of Obtain an IP address automatically
- Click OK and OK
After everything is closed, go back to the DOS prompt and enter the command of ipconfig /renew and press Enter. This would re-establish your internet connection again.

Hello, thank you for the helpful article. I am trying the every steps you said on my vista, but after I type in 111.111.111.11 the subnet mask section would not assigned numbers automatically, only with one 255, and the default gateway is blank. Would you please help to see what’s the next step should I do? Thanks
What’s your current setup? Do you have broadband modem? And the type of router you have?
i go through all the steps but my ip does not change. what am i doing wrong?
I have a sky router do you know how i can chage my ip on sky i did these steps but they did not work??
Log in to the router at 192.168.0.1, Username Admin, Password Sky, Select Router Status, then use the Sky Test button, which should reconnect you with a new IP address
If that doesn’t work, try the reset button on the router. Good luck!
you didn’t say if it was with cable or dsl, or if you were using dial up for internet, or if it was a stand alone home net ..assuming that you are using a cable or dsl modem, you concnet a router/switch after that modem using the correct cable, most of the systems come with the cabling needed. I prefer linksys, but that is my personal preference, they have great support and are available 24/7 an 11g/b system will give you fair speed (not great mind you) but your bottle neck is the cable/dsl modem anyway. and they inexpensive to purchase, i have included a walmart link to the linksys page. just an example of the price and availability of the item(s) there are many places to purchase similar items for setting up a wifi home net. don’t forget security of the wifi, setup suggestion for quick and easy:1 each WRT54G wireless router3 each WUSB54G usb network adapterthat should be under your target of $200most manufactures have good documentation and easy setup instructions hope this helps you.
I have had very good luck with Belkin routers, but otrehs on here will tell you they are junk. Just get a good name brand router. You will likely want to get a wireless router that is at least an 802.11G, and an 802.11N is even better, but you will pay for the higher speed of the N router. Make sure the cards or adapters you buy are the same brand as the router if possible. You can buy the same adapter for all three computers, just check that it has Vista as well as Xp drivers. You would need to set up the router first, using a hard wire connection to the main PC. Once you have the router set up with your security settings and encryption key, you can go totally wireless if you want.I use USB adapters that just plug into any USB port on the computer. The brand I bought came with and extension cable to allow the adapter to be up away from the case of the computer so the metal would not interfere with the signal. You would run the install disk FIRST and then plug in the adapter when told to. It will detect your router and ask if you want to connect. You then enter the encryption key and your should go online. Do this for each machine and your ready to set up the total network. After each machine can see the router, and each other. You will need to turn on file sharing on each machine. You will also have to go into My Computer and click on the drives you want to be able to share between one computer and another on your network. Once all that is done, you can set up any computers that do not have printers attached to print out of one that does. You do this through the Printer set up wizard, by requesting a network printer. You then just have to load the drivers into the computer for the printer and you should be able to print from that computer over the LAN to the other computers printer. ( Both must be turned on and running.)Another option for printing is to get a router that contains a print server. This will have a USB port for your printer in addition to the ethernet ports and modem port. You can set up the printer at the same location as the router, and all the computers in the net can install that printer.
I only did the release and renew and checked back with ipburger.com and my ip was changed. How is this possible if everyone says you need to do all those other steps?
Also when I go to the IPV 4 properties all the info is blank. What does that mean. Everywhere tutorial I see has thiers filled in with their ip address.
Thanks
